Alone in the Dark
Spatial Navigation using audio in both Unreal & Unity
Alone in the Dark is a VR demo created entirely by undergraduate students at the VEMI Lab to showcase spatial navigation with audio instead of sight. It was originally built in the Unity game engine but was completely redone in Unreal5.
When a participant enters a room in the demo, the door slams, and the lights go out, leaving the participant in the dark and hearing the sound of crying coming from a specific spot in the room. Once the participant navigates to the sound, the crying stops and a cat is heard in another spot.
Since not everyone can rely on sight to navigate a space, this demo highlights another effective form of spatial navigation.
